MDMA Facts

What is it?

MDMA — 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine — is a synthetically derived psychoactive substance classified as an empathogen. It is not the same as the street drug ecstasy.

Where did it come from?

Originally synthesized in the early 1900s by Merck, MDMA became more commonly used in the 1970s and early 1980s by some psychotherapists in the treatment of PTSD.

Research

Research into the use of MDMA as a therapeutic agent ceased in the mid-1980s when the USA made the drug illegal, largely due to recreational use of the drug rebranded as ecstasy.

Clinical Trials

Two multi-national Phase 3 clinical trials for MDMA-assisted psychotherapy have been successful, serving as the last step prior to a request for FDA approval for MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy in the US.

PTSD Treatment

About 7 or 8 out of every 100 people (or 7-8% of the population) will have PTSD at some point in their lives. About 8 million adults in the US have PTSD during a given year.

Clinical Trial Use

MDMA for clinical trial use is produced to a strict pharmaceutical standard and administered in a controlled setting by trained health professionals.

* The efficacy and safety of MDMA-assisted therapy are currently under investigation. MDMA has not been approved by Health Canada or any other regulatory body.
